Resetting Expectations

Four steps for when a group has drifted from what they agreed to at the start. Move them off the task, hand back their own goal, name what you have noticed, and let them set the fix. Work down it on your phone while you practise.

Step 1 of 4

Move them off the task

Take the group off the equipment or out of the process first. Away from the gear you get a teamwork conversation; standing at the machine you get a correction. It is a pattern interrupt as much as anything.

  • On the gear

I'll just get you to step over here with me for a minute.

Say it as a direction, not a request. Positive and assertive — never needy.

  • In a room

I'll get you to push your books forward and pens down.

  • Either

Park that where it is for a moment — I want to talk about something with the group.

Naming it as a conversation with the group, rather than with one person, keeps it off the individual before you have said anything.

Watch for — Needy sounds like "sorry, do you mind if we just quickly…". It tells the room you are uncomfortable, and they will treat the conversation the same way you did.
